Summer camp at Pechenegy orphanage.

We were happy to accept your invitation from Pechenezhsky boarding school to organize a camp for orphaned children on the base of the boarding school, as a long-term friendship now unites us. What was especially pleasing to us was that not only the children from boarding school attended our lessons, but also the children from the districts,. This camp was an unforgettable experience and the best way to share it is with these photos where some special moments are captured. Although these photos can not fully capture the warmth of the close relationship we formed, something which was present from the first till the last day of the camp.

I'd like to describe for you what it was it like in this camp report.

"Pechenegi 2008"
I invited my student friend from Kenya to this camp. It was the first time he had met Ukrainian children. She was worried how her meeting would go. When we arrived at the boarding school, all the children inside, ran out the doors to meet us. They helped us to carry our packages inside their home, and it was really was a home, because we could really feel the warmth of its heart.

The children made an excursion for us telling about everything at one time. Then we played a game called "acquaintance" with children, and one by one they told us about theirs' dreams. My friend's fear disappeared and the language barrier was quickly broken. After having talked with the children we gave them our presents. It was really very rewarding for us to see them laughing. They took some extra clothes for their friends who were to arrive the next week. I was Especially impressed by older children who had such a nurturing attitude toward the youngest girl, who has a handicap that makes it difficult for her to move around and she also some speech abnormality. But despite all these problems, this little baby girl is always active. Looking at her strong will to live, people could learn much by studying her and of course another good example can seen not only in the friendly relationship she has but also how the others behaved towards her. It was a real feeling of one family!

We led some interactive lessons, played sports games and did many other interesting things with the children. The children made some crafts out of beads and studied the English language with the help of a special computer program. They also watched and then discussed some cartoons and films. It was very nice to see that all the children were interested in participating..

It was hard to believe that some of these children had broken discipline at school, because at our lessons they were active and did their best to answer all the questions. Most children because of their lack of the necessary communication skills had serious communicative problems. Some of them do have families but those families can not be considered as normal or functional families. Respect and nurturance are the keys to communicating with children. I would like to acknowledge Lilya Holovko a young volunteer who helped children to study tatting. This work plays an important role in the mending process of speech abnormalities and improves cerebration. Lilya participated in all spheres and always had her own point of view what is very important because children take it as a friend's advise.

The most important principle while working with children is how close you will be to them, that is, whether you relate to them as an adult or as their friend. All games were designed and intended to unite all the children into a single family. Each of them could express their own mind. It helped them not only to be listened to, but also to know how listen to another person. And this is a very important principle which helps our children learn how to form relationship with other people.

I think that the children enjoyed all the interactive lessons which were provided for them. Their consistently high level of active participation in the lessons seems to confirm this Both Nataliya Andreevna and I tried to use different examples while explaining various problems to the children. But the most important aspect of the lessons was the contact between us and the children . We were also very happy to have some young people, who were former residents of the orphanage and are now graduated, involved in the lessons.

We celebrated some birthdays and took the children to the lake. It made us feel a closer attachment to them and it was difficult for us to leave the children. But when we saw their smiles it really warmed out hearts and our souls. Dima gave them a lot of presents on the last day and we were glad to see them shining. And certainly the best presents they gave to us were their warm smiles. I was greatly moved when I saw them crying. But I had only one question…why does our society ignore such a problem. But uniting our efforts we can brake this barrier which separates our children from their environment. We thank our God that there are people who are ready to help orphans and who do what they can to address these problems. And I'm extremely grateful to these people!

Respectfully, Abornev Oleg!
